The Meta-Heart: the organ that exists between us
Recently, I heard an extraordinarily beautiful explanation for why the human heart is located on the left side of the body, even though right side is God's favorite side... If the right side is associated in many spiritual traditions with light, truth, and divine order, why is the heart positioned on the left? Maybe because it was never meant to exist only for us? Heart is where Love lives... and you can only SHARE it, give what you have inside.. you can't demand it from the outside...
When two people who love each other stand face-to-face, the heart of each person appears on the other’s right side. My heart is on your right... your heart is on mine. In that position, a kind of original symmetry is restored: what rests on the left inside me appears on the right for you... My whole heart is all for you!
It made me wonder whether we may possess two hearts. One is physical. It beats inside the chest, contracts around one hundred thousand times a day, moves blood through the body, and sustains our biological life.
The other is the meta-heart. It cannot be seen on a medical scan, measured, or removed from the body. It comes into existence in the space between two people when one truly recognizes the other.... not merely their face, social identity, habits, or personality, but something within them that feels almost as familiar as one’s own being.
The meta-heart does not belong entirely to either person. It is created through encounter. It carries its own memory. It remembers a voice, a look, a touch, and the silences between words. It remembers how our breathing changed in the presence of a particular person. It remembers how the body recognized someone before the mind understood what was happening and how, in a room filled with people, our attention found one person without effort.
The physical heart remains inside the body. The meta-heart reaches beyond it. This may be why we can sometimes feel someone who is far away, smell them, even taste them even though they are far far away from you. We think of them seconds before receiving their message. We wake with a sense of their presence. We hear a familiar intonation among unfamiliar voices. Our bodies respond to someone who has been absent for a long time, as though distance exists in the physical world but not in the space that once came alive between us.
Memory, the nervous system, and attachment can explain some of this. The body truly does remember intimacy. The brain forms lasting associations between a person, an emotion, and a sense of safety or danger. It is a whole field within you now... Yet I do not believe this explains everything. Sometimes something emerges between two people that is greater than the sum of their shared experiences. A separate living space appears, with its own language, rhythm, symbols, and inner logic. Two people may live in different places and lead entirely separate lives while continuing to hear echoes of that space within themselves.
This is the meta-heart. It is not created by promises or an official relationship status. Marriage, commitment, or the spoken declaration “we are together now” cannot guarantee its existence. Two people may share a life for many years without ever meeting at this depth. Others may look into each other’s eyes once and experience a strange recognition that the mind will spend years trying to explain.
The meta-heart appears BEFORE any decisions are made. It does not ask whether the feeling is convenient, whether it fits our plans, or what might happen if we allow it to change our lives. It simply recognizes.... And this is where the most difficult part begins. The meta-heart belongs to the realm of the soul, while relationships must be built in earthly life. Inner recognition is not enough to sustain a relationship. A relationship also requires time, presence, action, honesty, and choice. A person must not only feel the movement of the heart but also allow that movement to take form. Sometimes a meta-heart exists between two people, but a shared life does not.
The feeling may be real, while one person remains unable to follow it. Fear enters the conversation. Consequences are calculated, conditions are created, safer words are chosen, and complete inner certainty is awaited. What the heart recognizes in a single moment, the mind may negotiate for years. This is where conditions enter: If you reveal your desire first, then I will examine what I feel. If your movement awakens a response in me, then MAYBE I will tell the truth and take a step toward you.
These are the quiet, dirty bargains fear attempts to make with love. One person must expose their longing, accept the risk, and initiate the movement, while the other remains safely positioned as someone who is merely responding. If something goes wrong, the person who moved first can once again be portrayed as the one who asked, insisted, disrupted, or wanted too much. The other person retains the comfort of innocence: I did not begin this. I only responded! But love cannot live inside such a transaction. Neither can truth.
True love, that instant recognition doesn't demand any deals, it doesn't listen to it... and yes, this type of acceptance MAY demand courage, responsibility, and difficult choices... done by the mind, because it's the mind that is afraid of the truth... but that meta heart does not ask another person to carry the risk and blame for awakening it. Truth does not become true only after someone else makes it safe to speak. What arises from the deepest place within us rejects bargains that protect one person’s innocence at the cost of another person’s vulnerability.
One of the most painful human stories begins precisely here: two hearts have already met, but the people themselves never make a real movement toward one another. This does not mean that the connection was imaginary. Yet the meta-heart cannot live our human lives for us. It cannot make decisions, arrange a meeting, speak a difficult truth, or open a closed door. We must do those things ourselves. And sometimes we choose safety. and that is normal...
Love then continues to exist in an invisible space but never receives a body. It's like air - you can't catch it! If you do - you will end up with the empty fist... Your ideas will stay in that idealistic realms... unless you bring other elements like clay and water, and start using your hands to shape the creation that existed only in your head... Love without that clay and water becomes an inner knowing, a memory, a possibility... a parallel life that might have happened. This can be particularly painful: to feel that something living exists between two people while seeing that, in reality, it barely moves. Can we say that someone we loved took our heart with them?
On the level of the meta-heart, they probably did. They carry part of the world that was created between us. After a separation, certain streets, songs, words, and scents acquire a second meaning forever. Another person becomes part of our inner geography... for LIFE! But they do not take away our ability to love... love another person maybe... The meta-heart is not a piece torn from our identity. It is more like a new organ of perception born through an encounter. Through it, we discover aspects of ourselves that we did not previously know: our depth, tenderness, passion, vulnerability, jealousy, fear of loss, even anger, and ability to see another person in their wholeness.
Even when a relationship ends, this organ does not disappear. Its purpose changes. At first, it becomes the place through which we hurt. We feel emptiness where a familiar presence once lived. It seems as if part of our life continues somewhere without us. We return mentally to old conversations, search for a different ending, wait for movement, and listen to the space between us. Eventually, the meta-heart begins to lead us back to ourselves.
We slowly understand that everything we experienced has become part of our own depth. Love no longer requires the continuation of the story in order to remain real. It can stop being an expectation and become knowledge of what our own heart is capable of.
This is neither a quick nor a painless transition. Sometimes we must acknowledge that spiritual intimacy and a person’s readiness to live that intimacy are two different things. Two people can feel each other deeply and still choose different roads. They may share a meta-heart without ever creating a shared life.
Love never leads to possession. I realized the other day is that true creator is the one who is NOT attached to his or her creation and allows the created form to have enough space to breathe to the creation/the form has the ability to reveal itself... Love does not always culminate in union - creation in the form. Sometimes its purpose is to open a space within us that was previously closed and then leave us with a question: What will we do with the depth that has opened?
Will we continue waiting for someone who cannot enter that space? Will we close our hearts so that we never experience such pain again? Or will we allow what happened to expand us without turning love into a lifelong obligation to remain outside a closed door?
I am drawn to the idea that the meta-heart cannot be destroyed. A connection that once changed us does not vanish simply because the relationship has changed form or ended. But we can stop feeding it with expectation. We can allow it to take its rightful place in our story without giving it authority over the rest of our lives.
Someone can remain within the meta-heart without remaining the direction in which we are walking. Maybe this is why the human heart is located on the left. It reminds us that we are inherently a little asymmetrical. A space has been left within us for an encounter with another. When that person stands before us, a moment of inner alignment appears: my left becomes your right, and your left becomes mine. But this alignment cannot be held by force. It cannot be begged for, earned, or produced through endless negotiation securing a better deal for us. Both people must take the step and stand before each other. In full trust of the unknows WILLING to give it enough space to see what could be revealed if there is no attachment to the form at all...
The meta-heart may recognize them. But they must choose to come closer.
